When he arrives he finds people sweeping dust from the stoops back into their houses and people milking upside down to get more cream. The town has been cursed with chronic stupidity for 200 years and Leon's job is to break the curse. No one tells him that if he stays over 24 hours and fails to break the curse, he becomes stupid too. Why doesn't Leon leave? He has fallen in love with a girl so stupid that she has only recently learned how to sit down. Of course, Leon breaks the curse and gets the girl.

An Evening With Mark Twain

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.
"Mark Twain entertains audiences who love a show. Mr. Sutton has created a Broadway-Branson type play using Sam Clemens many talents to portray Twain. Mr.Sutton plays Twain the way Clemens would have played him today. Clemens played guitar, banjo, piano and harmonica. The audience is pleasantly surprised to find that the music of his era; now called traditional music, makes the show a sing-a-long fun event while keeping the wonderfully witty and humorous stories of Twain. And the dramatic pieces are right out of Twains most famous books, Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, and Roughing It."

Tom and Huck's Raft Building Contest

Sat, February 21st - Sat, February 28th 2009

The weather is fine! Come to the Woodstock Park Gazebo today!
Tom Sawyer was always looking for new ways to have fun. Racing bugs, impressing girls, exploring caves, and finding treasure were just a few of his many adventures. Playing pirates on an island in the middle of the Mississippi River with friends, Joe Harper and Huckleberry Finn, was his favorite pastime, but he had to build rafts in order to reach Jackson Island.
Now it's your turn to build a raft in order to explore the pirate island!

The first ingredient in raft-building is creativity. The second ingredient is problem-solving. The great part about this activity is that there is no one way to build a raft. Overall, remember to have fun!!!

Approved construction materials include any material that will float.

Examples of suitable materials include:
Corrugated cardboard
Paper
Poster board
Tape
Hot glue
Foam
Plastic
Wood
Tin Foil
Shrink wrap
String/twine
Rope
Drinking straws
Rubber bands
Pencils/ pens
Any decorative materials

The sky's the limit when it comes to materials, but please refrain from any materials that are toxic, either for you or for the environment.
Bring your finished raft or build one
with our materials at no charge during the Mark Twain Festival in Canton on February 21st or Mark Twain Festival in Woodstock on February 28th.
All entrants will receive a free book!
Rafts may be submitted and/or built from 10am-2pm.
Judging will be from 2-3 with Awards given at 3pm.

All raft entries must be no larger than 10in. x 10in. x 10in.

(these instructions are also on our Downloads page in a printable PDF file)
